My parents were placed in a nursing home several weeks ago. On Monday, they both had eye appointments, and I met them at the eye Dr.'s office. The aide who came with them didn't bring either of my parents eye glasses. Mom's she just plain forgot, and she waid dad lost his! Who is responsible to replace the missing glasses? Aren't the people working at the home supposed to keep track of this stuff? I" was also shocked at my dad' and mom's appearance. Dad would alwalys dress nice going out to appointments. They had on a t shirt he would normally do yard work in, a pair of navy shorts with a draw string that looked like swim trunks, a pair of surgery socks footies) from the home, with his $120.00 shoes with an ankle monitor right there for all to see. mom's hair was so greasy you could fry an egg in it.(they sias dad's socks were missing. he went in with 10 pair that the laundry markeed with his name). Who is responsible for replacing hese missing items?I was so mad I could have spit.

Things do get lost, but from what you said about the overall appearance of your parents, this doesn't sound like a well run home. Most homes make it a point to have people dressed nicely for appointments and certainly to have them clean. I remember one nurse commenting on how nicely my dad's skin was cared for when he went in for an exam. She asked which nursing home he lived in and when I told him she said she thought so. They were excellent.
So, some homes are much better than others. But this one where you parents are may be substandard. Perhaps this is an unusual circumstance, but I'd ask to have a chat with the administrator. I would be just as mad as you are. Good luck,
Carol

This is just so frustrating for all...you, your parents and the NH. Carol is spot on in your speaking to the NH administrator. I'd also suggest that you go to the NH and spend several hours/sessions there to get a feel for how it's run and what you can do to make things work better for your parents within their system. It could be that how this facility is run and your level of expectations will never work out. If this is a private pay situation, you can be pretty specific in what you tell them you expect to be done but if not, then I'd look for another NH to move them to. My mom is in her 2nd NH - the first was so-so for the first few months then the entire adminstration changed not for the better and the medical director's affiliations changed so I moved her within the year. If they are on Medicaid, you can move them with very little advance notice too. Private pay usually requires a 30 or 60 day notice.

The NH is not responsible for lost or missing items and you or whomever signed your folks in, signed off on that. Stuff walks. Personally I find it is NOT the staff but other residents who take/move/hide stuff or your family member drops/leaves or gives stuff to others. I have eveyrthing with a hard surface marked in bright nailpolish with mom's name or initials - I do everything from her walker to hand lotion to picture frames to her TV, etc; regarding her clothes, the laundry is pretty rough and super hot so maybe 1/2 of my mom's once nice wardrobe was trashed within the first few months. Many items just don't make it out of the laundry and are garbage and get thrown away. I just keep it all simple and heavy duty cottons. When I walk the halls, almost always I can spot something of my mom's in someone else's room too. Usually it's the same 2 who take stuff.

So it was 1 aide to bring both your parents to a outside MD appointment? That's alot to juggle, you might the next time go to the NH and help get them ready and with all their stuff and go in the NH van with them and the aide to the appointment rather than just meet them there.

OH, I also reported the loss to the local POLICE and they went to the nursing home right after I filed the complaint about all of her items missing. SO, they knew I was NOT kidding and would take them to court.

One of the nursing homes I had mom at lost ALL of her clothes other than 2 pairs of pants. Her glasses, her purses, all clothes except 3 pairs of pants. I did sign a form that says they are not responsible for lost items. But to lose EVERYTHING? I sent them a letter DEMANDING they pay me for all items missing or I would take them to court. I got a check in the mail a week later for almost 200.00. So at least I could buy her more clothes. Not enough to get new glasses tho and I told them that too!!

A New York based company provides systems that help nursing homes prevent loss of residents' items. They have worked with several nursing homes in the U.S. It's called Scandent.
