My father-in-law lives with me and my husband and has been since my mother-in-law passed away. He is 81. We are very confused about his outlook on life. He doesn't eat healthy unless he is scared something is wrong. He is able to drive, balance his check book, live a normal life. But there are times we are not sure if he is normally functioning or not. He has diabetes, hypertension, arthritis, and is on medications. He only visits his doctor once a year, but never follows directions. We obviously can't force him to do anything, but we get worried when he acts strangely every so often. Lately, he has been sleeping a lot more than normal and going outside in the cold without a jacket in 30 degree temperatures.

vmhan66, check with your father-in-law doctor to see if any of the meds that your father-in-law is taking could be causing hot flashes. With hot flashes, going outdoors without a jacket in 30 degree weather feels wonderful !!

As for the sleeping a lot, again with the meds. Blood pressure pills can make one very tired. I remember I could barely stay awake until my dosage was adjusted. I still get sleepy mid-afternoon but it is durable.

My mother-in-law has been doing that for the last year. She doesn’t realize that it is going to be cold out, them is too proud to say she is cold. Sometimes she isn’t aware of what season it is if she looks out the window and sees the sun shining she thinks it is going to be nice weather.
