My father is in an assisted living facility. His insulin is paid through the VA, however to get injections covered at his facility, they are charging an extra $1300.00 a month. He is unable to manage this extra expense. He does not qualify for medicaid. Any ideas on how to get insulin injections covered? He is not able to do this himself. Thank you in advance.

First check with the VA to see if help with getting insulin shots is a covered cost, or what recommendations would they suggest.

Yes, I'd ask how he gets into a facility that will provide him the insulin injections. Maybe, he needs a new classification or transfer. I'm not familiar with VA provisions. I hope you can find some answers.

Hello,
I work in an assisted living facility in CT and they are different everywhere. However, usually assisted living facilities are private pay so as a person's care needs go up so, does the cost. He may qualify for Aide and Attendance through the VA which will contribute to his cost of assisted living services. The website to get more info is: http://www.benefits.va.gov/pension/aid_attendance_housebound.asp
I recommend looking into this and applying if he is eligible because it will pay for some of his care.
In CT Medicaid does not cover assisted living, I am not sure how that works in other states. However, if he is homebound Medicare may cover some nursing visits to see if they can try and teach him to administer the insulin, of course that would depend on his abilities. Any VNA or nursing agency in your area can do an evaluation to see if this is a possibility for him.
I hope that this info was helpful.

I am assuming that that's the fee the AL charges to administer services? That's so high! How many times a day does he get the shots? I am not sure what type of benefit would help with this kind of charge.

Is this a VA facility? I thought all was covered there.

How about if you prefill the syringes for him? Would he be able to self inject?

There are many devices that are simple to use and deliver a premeasure amount. I bet your dad can do that

Talk to the VA about getting self administer doses for him
