My grandmother lives at my aunt's house. I've read about tax breaks but are there other types of reimbursement she can apply for? My grandmother only receives social security. My aunt and grandma both agree that living at an asst living or nursing home is not an option. My grandma is mentally coherent but her body is deteriorating including walking complications due to herniated discs and Type II diabetes. Any suggestions and/or advice would be greatly appreciated and thank you in advance.

Depending on the State funding. Check with the Area of Aging and Disabilities in your area. I was able to get respite hours, supplies and medical equipment needed to care of my 91 year old mom. She has a low income and they base their benefits upon the income of the patient. Also if you can qualify for medicaide and she has less than 2000 in the bank. She could be paid by the state a certain amount every month. Depends on the needs of the patient. If you have a Elder care or Area of Aging and Disablities in your area..call and the social worker can redirect you to the proper channels.

Grandma could apply for Medicaid. The Elderly Waiver program under Medicaid (it has different names in different places) pays for items and help that will allow the recipient to stay out of a nursing home..
